Launch Event - Shared Green Societies

A visual in green and blue with happy people connected

Across Europe, the demand for a green transition that is inclusive, just and has the backing of the people is increasingly urgent. Communities, authorities, civil society and SSH (Social Sciences and Humanities) researchers are innovating every day, yet too often work in isolation. Building shared understanding is key to linking technological and policy opportunities with fairness concerns, while responding to mounting pressure to act.

Shared Green Societies is a new European forum designed to bridge this gap—connecting evidence, practice, and policy, and bringing together those leading on the ground with those shaping ideas and strategies.

The Forum launched in Brussels on 28 January 2026.

The launch event brought together civil society, researchers, local and regional actors and policymakers from across Europe to co-create the forum’s next steps. The forum will provide support for community-led initiatives and help secure a green transition that is fair, inclusive and firmly supported by citizens.

Evening policy panel debate led by Friends of Europe on behalf of the EU funded project SSH CENTRE

As the next European research and innovation framework programme (Horizon Europe 2028–2034) takes shape, a key question emerges: how can Europe connect technological advances with the social and political realities that shape their impact? The budget of the forthcoming programme is expected to grow significantly in scale and ambition, with a push to harness cutting-edge technologies in support of the green and digital transitions. To deliver on these goals, Europe will need to ensure that social sciences and humanities (SSH) play a central role alongside science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM).

We will gather senior stakeholders in person and online to examine how the next research and innovation framework can contribute to more evidence-based policymaking, and thereby strengthen Europe’s competitiveness and resilience.

Note: Separate registration required.
