Ripple Effects Toolkit - How local actors can drive change from the in-between
The Ripple Effects Toolkit is a practical resource for local actors, civil society organisations, municipalities, community groups, facilitators and researchers working to support sustainability transitions. Developed through the SHARED GREEN DEAL project, the toolkit draws on insights from 24 social experiments across Europe and feedback from more than 100 practitioners who participated in a series of workshops exploring how change happens in practice.
At the heart of the toolkit is the concept of the "in-between": the space between individuals and larger systems where people, organisations, communities and institutions interact. The toolkit argues that meaningful change often emerges through these connections, rather than solely through individual behaviour change or top-down policy interventions.
Through a series of practical exercises, users are guided to map their initiatives, identify connections and relationships, and explore the ripple effects their work can generate. By reflecting on how ideas, practices, knowledge and collaborations spread between people and organisations, the toolkit helps users better understand their role in creating wider behavioural, social and systemic change.
Designed for both individual and group use, the toolkit offers a flexible approach to reflection, learning and planning. It supports practitioners in making their work more visible, identifying opportunities for greater impact and strengthening collective action towards more sustainable and just futures.
